About Me

My daughter, Karly Wahlin, lived with Rett Syndrome. From her birth until her death in 2012, we were on a difficult and incredible journey together as we worked to find compassionate, competent care. During those 27 years, I interacted with dozens of practitioners.  It was my great honor and challenge to manage Karly's evolving health needs throughout her life, from the early years when we were trying to understand her disorder, to her  end-of-life care.

I have witnessed the unexpected on this journey. Karly, who was unable to speak on her own, was able to share her voice as a writer (using facilitated communication) and composer. With the support of our family, devoted caregivers, and medical professionals, she lived a full and purpose-filled life.

In addition to caring for Karly, I have always been drawn to find ways to support and enrich the lives of marginalized people. As an experiential educator at Wilder Forest, I provided hands-on learning opportunities for students with special needs. I also served as the Director of The Closet, an extension of Valley Outreach, that provides clothing for women and children in need.
I am working to inspire deeper compassion and understanding by sharing my experiences as a family member of someone living with a chronic illness.
